Adolf Hitler[a] (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who was the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 until his suicide in 1945. He rose to power as the leader of the Nazi Party,[c] becoming the chancellor in 1933 and then taking the title of Führer und Reichskanzler in 1934.[d] His invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 marked the start of the Second World War. As the decades pass between his time and ours, there’s the very real chance of his becoming thought of as a legendary creature like Dracula or Frankenstein’s Monster, the stuff of horror movies and comedies. Hitler was real, the horror he unleashed was real, and what one man did –- a man, not a mythological creature – another man may do in the future. That’s why I chose to write a biography largely comprised of what are sometimes called “human interest” stories.

Although the book is organized by subject areas (
