Achille Castiglioni
Achille Castiglioni was born in Milan in 1918. He graduated from Politecnico di Milano University with a degree in architecture in the late 1930s and, shortly after, set up a design office with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo in Milan.
Career
There, he dedicated himself to experimenting with industrial products. Achille, along with his brothers, went on to become one of the most renowned industrial designers in post-war Italy. He was one of the founding members of Association for Industrial Design (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, ADI), established in 1956.
His works are included in permanent collections in museums all around the world, including 14 pieces at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The designer has won nine “Compasso d′Oro” awards, including a special mention as an individual dedicated to industrial design who, by means of his incomparable experience, “elevated industrial design to the highest levels of culture,” in 1989.

Achille went on to study architecture and became interested in the idea of developing a complete design process after graduating in 1944. Achille later joined the design practice founded by his brothers. Livio Castiglioni left the practice in 1952 and the remaining two brothers worked as a team until Pier Giacomo died in 1968. Designs by the creative duo were instrumental in defining the playful intelligence for which Italian design was known in the latter half of the 20th century. The Castiglioni Brothers were also renowned for their lighting design, most famously for the Arco lamp which is still in production 60 years later. Background
Achille Castiglioni was a famous industrial designer who created many lamps for Flos, including the Snoopy, Arco, Frisbi, Toio and Parentesi lamps. He was frequently inspired by everyday objects made use of common materials. He kept material consumption to a minimum but created products with maximum effect.
Achille Castiglioni studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan and opened a design studio in 1944 with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Livio withdrew from the business in 1952 and the business continued as a partnership.
Together, the two dock formed one of the most important/witty, elegant and innovative creative teams in the history of modern design.
