The now-tarnished reputation of Christopher Columbus as the heroic voyager who discovered America in a daring expedition had been cultivated for hundreds of years, with an assist in the 18th century from Noah Webster.

The West Hartford lexicographer and textbook pioneer made sure to include in American textbooks glowing accounts of Columbus and his voyage, creating an image that lasted for centuries. Noah Webster (October 16, – May 28, ) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and author. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education". His "Blue-Backed Speller" books taught generations of American children how to spell and read. He is most well known for the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in as An American Dictionary of the English Language.
