    Michael Ellis Fisher (3 September – 26 November ) was an English physicist, as well as chemist and mathematician, known for his many seminal contributions to statistical physics, including but not restricted to the theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena. He was the Horace White Professor of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics at Cornell University.[2] Later he moved to the University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, where he was University System of Maryland Regents Professor, a Distinguished University Professor and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher.[1]

    Michael Fisher was born in to Roswita Hoffman 'Roz' Fisher and Robert Fisher. They had one other son, James.[2][3]

    In , Fisher graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, with a B.A. degree, and thereafter entered the University of Chicago. There he received an M.A. in and a Ph.D. in for his dissertation The Imperial Court and the Province: A Social and Administrative History of Pre-British Awadh ().[4][5]
