    Lady Mary Shepherd (–) was the author of two philosophical treatises, the Essay upon the Relation of Cause and Effect and the Essays on the Perception of an External Universe and Other Subjects Connected with the Doctrine of Causation. She also later wrote three essays: an essay on vision published in The Philosophical Magazine in and reprinted that same year in The Kaleidoscope: or, Literary and Scientific Mirror; her “Observations” on the work of John Fearn, published by Fearn—apparently without Shepherd’s consent1—with his reply in Parriana: or Notices of the Rev. Samuel Parr; and an essay “Lady Mary Shepherd’s Metaphysics,” responding to Fearn and to Dugald Stewart, and concisely laying out her own philosophical views.2 Shepherd’s work was apparently well regarded in her own time; in a history of philosophy published the year after Shepherd’s death, Robert Blakey ( 40) discussed Shepherd’s work and praised her as displa
