Dred Scott
A man who “lived all but two of his sixty-odd years in obscurity,” Dred Scott was born into slavery in Southampton, Virginia, around Dred Scott was owned by Peter Blow, who moved to Huntsville, Alabama and took Scott with him. After an unsuccessful farming venture, Blow moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in Blow died in , and Scott was bought by a United States Army Surgeon, Dr. John Emerson.
In late , Emerson moved to Fort Armstrong in Illinois, a free state, and took Scott with him. In , Emerson was transferred to Fort Snelling in the Wisconsin Territory (present-day Minnesota). In , the Missouri Compromise banned slavery in the land included in the Louisiana Purchase north of the latitude line 36°30’, with the exception of Missouri itself. Despite this, Scott remained enslaved during his time at Fort Snelling. Who Was Dred Scott?
Dred Scott was born into slavery sometime around and made history decades later bygd launching a legal battle to gain his freedom. Scott and his family had spent time in two free states while working for their owner John Emerson. After Emerson died, Scott tried and failed to buy freedom for han själv and his family. He took his case to the Missouri courts, where he won, only to have the decision overturned. Scott’s federal case wound up at the U.S. Supreme Court. The court’s decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford was handed down on March 6, , and also denied Scott’s freedom. The extremely controversial event was a precursor for Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War. Scott died in his 60s in , prior to either event.

Dred Scott (c.&#; – September 17, ) was an enslavedAfrican American man who, along with his wife, Harriet, unsuccessfully sued for the freedom of themselves and their two daughters, Eliza and Lizzie, in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of , popularly known as the "Dred Scott decision". The Scotts claimed that they should be granted freedom because Dred had lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory for four years, where slavery was illegal, and laws in those jurisdictions said that slave holders gave up their rights to slaves if they stayed for an extended period.
In a landmark case, the United States Supreme Court decided 7–2 against Scott, finding that neither he nor any other person of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, and therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal co
