    William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on 8 February When his father died, Thomas Ewing adopted him. Sherman attended the United States Military Academy, graduating in Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3d Cavalry in Florida. In , he was promoted to first lieutenant. During the Mexican War, Sherman served in California as an aide to Generals Stephen W. Kearney, Persifor F. Smith, and Richard B. Mason.

    In , he married Ellen Ewing, was made a captain and posted to Saint Louis and then New Orleans. Sherman resigned from the Army in to pursue ventures in banking and law. In , he became the superintendent of a military college in Alexandria, Louisiana.
