Leucippus (Leukippos)
The Leukippos Tract: its origin, nature, and influence. Thomas D. Worthen Synopsis and rationale: There are many references in the ancient record to Leukippos, the supposed founder of atomism and master of Demokritos. Also in the record is a report that the most important philosophical heir to Atomism, Epikouros, said that there was never a philosopher named Leukippos. Until a century ago the latter datum was ignored and the historicity of Leukippos simply taken for granted. Ernst Rohde created a problem in the history of philosophy by focusing upon the notice by Epikouros as veracious. Gathering other observations from the record--the scarcity and parsimony of information about Leukippos, the meagreness of Aristotelian references to him especially in comparison with Demokritos, complete absence of Leukippos from the pages of some traditions of ancient philosophy, the erroneous attribution to him of the two titles he seemed to own that belong rather to Demo

Leucippus and Democritus
Leucippus and Democritus were the earliest Greek atomists. The originator of the atomic theory, Leucippus (fifth century BCE), must be considered a speculative thinker of the first beställning, but to Democritus (c. c. BCE) must go the kredit for working out the detailed application of the theory and supporting it with a subtle epistemology. Moreover, the range of Democritus's researches surpassed that of any earlier philosopher, and he appears to have been an original and, for his day, advanced ethical thinker.
We have very little biographical uppgifter for Leucippus. Epicurus fryst vatten even reported to have said that there was no philosopher Leucippus, but the bevis of Aristotle decisively refutes this opinion (if, indeed, Epicurus did not merely intend to deny Leucippus's philosophical importance). Leucippus was probably born at Miletus; reports associating him with Elea or Abdera should be taken as reflecting views concerning his philosophical affiliations rathe

Leucippus
5th-century BCE Greek philosopher
This article is about the philosopher. For other uses, see Leucippus (disambiguation).
Leucippus (; Λεύκιππος, Leúkippos; fl.5th century BCE) was a pre-SocraticGreek philosopher. He is traditionally credited as the founder of atomism, which he developed with his student Democritus. Leucippus divided the world into two entities: atoms, indivisible particles that make up all things, and the void, the nothingness that exists between the atoms. He developed his philosophy as a response to the Eleatics, who believed that all things are one and the void does not exist. Leucippus's ideas were influential in ancient and Renaissance philosophy. Leucippus was the first Western philosopher to develop the concept of atoms, but his ideas only bear a superficial resemblance to modern atomic theory.
Leucippus's atoms come in infinitely many forms and exist in constant motion, creating a deterministic world in which everything is caused by t
