Join us at the Wende Museum this Friday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m. for an insightful program dedicated to Ceija Stojka, a remarkable Roma artist and activist who survived the Holocaust as a child and then turned to art to process her trauma.

Delve into an illustrated introduction to Stojka’s remarkable life through a discussion of the first English monograph dedicated to her: Roma Artist Ceija Stojka – What Should I Be Afraid Of? (Hirmer Publishers, 2024).

The afternoon will feature highlights from Stojka’s work, including pieces on display in our current exhibition Ceija Stojka and Scenes of Roma Life, showcasing her vivid reflections on pre-war Roma life and her harrowing experiences in the camps.

Speakers Dr. Susanne Keppler-Schlesinger and Dr. Stephanie Buhmann, both contributors to the monograph, will guide us through Stojka’s legacy.

During the 1980's, forty years after her liberation from the Nazi extermination camps, Ceija Stojka starts through writings a work of memory, which is very quickly coupled, with drawings and paintings.
Karin Berger (author and film maker), whom she meets in 1986 and who encourages her to testify, transcribes and edits her manuscripts and allows the publication of her first text in 1988. In the small book “We live in the hidden” (1988), Ceija writes down her experience as a child in the concentration camps, a unique testimony. This book and Ceija’s great public personality evoke a movement within the Roma and Sinti, starting to fight for their rights in society.
